The Mayo Clinic Diet - Its Many Shapes and Sizes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What is "the" Mayo Clinic Diet"? Is it cabbage soup? Bacon and grapefruit juice? Jello and cottage cheese? Chances are, you've heard of one of these variations at some point as the latest and greatest way to shed excess poundage fast. Well, you may not know this, but this now famous diet takes many forms, and there is no one diet that is endorsed and recommended by the Mayo Clinic, save for the new book published and endorsed by doctors of the Mayo Clinic entitled Healthy Weight for Everybody which is actually more of a lifestyle than a temporary weight loss fix.

Although you may have heard through the years of this famous diet, you've probably just heard the latest fads spread through rumor and urban legend as being endorsed by the renowned Clinic. We will examine some of these diets, and talk about their safety, effectiveness, and more importantly the speed at which you can expect to lose weight on them - since this is the major draw of these diets.

The Mayo Clinic is a famous medical facility and practice that is owned by the not for profit Mayo Foundation organization which is located in Rochester, Minnesota. Although its home base is in Minnesota, the Mayo Foundation also operates medical facilities such as clinics and hospitals in several other major metropolitan areas. Exactly how the idea of an exclusive diet endorsed by this organization came about, no one seems to be able to pinpoint.

Although they may not be an officially endorsed diet, some of the rumored eating plans were in fact very effective at taking excess weight off exceedingly fast and relatively safely. Of course, there were also some that were so restrictive that they were nearly impossible to complete every phase, or they were so calorie restrictive that their undertaking could become a huge health risk since the drastic calorie reduction would be a huge shock to anyones system.

The Basic Foundation of the Many Variations of the "Mayo Clinic" Diet

The most popular version of the diet consists of 2 eggs any style, 2 strips of bacon, and grapefruit juice for breakfast. You may also drink coffe or tea black. Then for lunch you get more grapefruit juice, meat and a salad with light dressing. For dinner, it's more grapefruit juice, meat, a vegetable and coffee or tea black. Although it doesn't seem too bad, I tried this one and had a tough time with it. I found that I was very hungry most of the time, and grew tired of the menu after just a few days. I did lose weight though. You are supposed to go on the diet and stick to it for twelve days, then off for two, then back on for twelve. I lasted four days and lost about 5 pounds.

The Problem with the Diet

Most variations of this eating plan, while they can result in very fast and relatively dramatic weight loss, are not based on nutritionally sound principles. However, that does not mean you can't try it - just don't rely on it as a lifestyle eating plan, and do plan on gaining the weight back fast if you go off of it and start eating normally again. It usually takes water weight off for the first few pounds (as with many other diets), and water weight as we all know is usually temporary weight loss unless we stick to a diet plan for at least a month or more.

The method also is based in deprivation of certain food groups, and focuses entirely too much on high fat and high cholesterol food, which can elevate your triglycerides and wreak havoc on your cholesterol count if you are on it for any prolonged period of time. This diet has also generally been reported to make some people feel sluggish, lethargic and even to induce a depressed mood. This may be due to the high concentration of protein, low concentration of fiber, and the ensuing imbalance of blood sugar levels which leads to all of the previously mentioned symptoms of lethargy and depressed mood.

The Bottom Line on the "Mayo Clinic" Diet:

If you must try it, just be mindful of the pitfalls. Do not attempt to use this diet as a fallback whenever you gain a few pounds - this surely will lead to yo-yo dieting and unhealthy weight gain and weight loss frequency. There are lots of other good diets out there now that focus more on balance and moderation, which are way more realistic as lifetime eating habits. Those diets are the ones that are the keepers.

Cabbage Soup Diet - Getting To Know The Cabbage

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The cabbage is a famous cruciferous vegetable, just like Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and Cauliflower, that is just commonly used for cooking. It is also popular for its discovered medicinal and therapeutic properties. It is even famous for its perceived "fat-burning" effects, thus the existence of the so-called Cabbage Soup Diet. But most especially, the vegetable was pretty well known because like any other cruciferous vegetables, it is believed to contain certain chemicals that can help prevent the deadly cancer.

The History of Cabbage

The cabbage, from the Brassica oleracea Capitata Group, is a plant that is a member of the Family Brassicaceae or Cruciferae. It was taken from a leafy wild mustard herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. The cabbage was recognized by the ancient Romans and Greeks. They praised this vegetable for its medicinal and healing properties.

The English name of the vegetable was derived from the Normanno-Picard "caboche", which means "head". Because of its ready availability, its being high in nutrients and because it is inexpensive, the cabbage is among those that top the list of healthy and nutritious foods.

The use of the cabbage was believed to have started during the Greek era. Back then, the Greeks used newly picked white cabbages and made juice out of them. The juice was used to relieve painful or infected eyes. The cabbage juice was also drunk by Romans and Egyptians because it was also believed that the juice can prevent intoxication.

The Health Benefits of Cabbage

We can have a lot of health benefits from the cabbage. Cabbage is anti-inflammatory vegetable, which either reduces, if not prevents, swelling and tenderness. It has lactic acid that helps in disinfecting the colon. Cabbage can also be utilized to lessen headaches. One more benefit that we can get from the cabbage is its anti-cancer properties. Cabbage is also believed to be effective in treating other skin conditions. Also, the cabbage juice when drunk from the stem can be a very good remedy for treating ulcers.

If you are suffering from gastritis, the fresh cabbage juice is very good for you. Drinking an amount of 25-50 ml cabbage juice daily is also very useful in dealing with headache, bronchitis, asthma, and other problems in digestion. Mouth ulcers will be healed faster when white cabbage juice is dabbed on the mouth ulcers.

The Varieties of Cabbages

Cabbages have several varieties according to its shape and maturity. There are Green and Red Cabbages. There is also the more delicate Bok Choy, which is a Chinese variety of cabbage. The "Early Jersey Wakefield" (cone-shaped), "Late Flat Dutch", and "Danish Ballhead" (late, round-headed) are the traditional varieties.

Raw cabbages are commonly shredded or are sliced into thin strips. These are used in salads, like that in coleslaw. Its leaves are softened by placing the whole head of cabbage inside the freezer or parboiling and then filled with chopped rice and/or meat. Cabbage often supplements to stews or soups. The Cabbage Soup Diet is exceptionally popular in both Eastern and Central Europe.

How to Choose a Soup Pot For the Best Soup Recipes

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is important to buy a good quality soup pot if you want to make the best soup recipes. Soup pots are versatile and you can also use them for braising meat, making broth and cooking pasta. Whether you want to make a pumpkin soup recipe or a braised meat stew, using a good pot is essential to your success.

The shape and size of a soup pot are important factors. Soup pots range from four to twenty quarts in capacity, and then you have commercial ones, which can be enormous. A soup pot tends to be smaller than a stock pot because you usually make less soup at once than with stock, but buying one pot, which is good for making soup or stock, is a good investment, because you will not have to buy two pots.

Tips for Choosing Soup Pots

Choose something between six and twelve quarts because this makes the pot versatile enough for many uses. Soup pots normally have deep straight sides, a round base, and a lid. You can use something smaller and wider, such as a big saucepan, for making soup.

A thick, heavy base is very important because a thin bottom might result in burnt soup. Soup can take a long time to cook so the pot will be on the stove for perhaps hours at a time. Copper, cast iron, steel, and aluminum are soup pot material choices and there are pros and cons to each one.

It is important to choose a soup making pot with a strong, securely attached handle. Rivets or heavy screws should be used to attach the handle to the pot. The handles should also be comfortable and big enough to get your fingers through.

Recipe for Split Pea and Ham Soup

This is a great recipe to make in a big pot. The combination of ham, split peas, spinach, vegetables, and herbs is magic and this is a hearty, rich, and flavorful soup, which is perfect for lunch or dinner. This recipe serves ten people.

5 cups water
2 diced celery ribs
2 fresh or smoked ham hocks
1 cup slivered spinach leaves
1 minced clove garlic
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 finely chopped sprigs fresh parsley
2 finely chopped carrots
1 finely chopped onion
5 cups chicken broth
1 sliced leek (white part only)
2 sprigs fresh thyme
Salt and black pepper, to taste

How to make it:

Stir together the chicken broth and water in a big soup pot, then bring the mixture to a boil. Add the split peas, ham hocks, celery, thyme and half the parsley. Turn down the heat and simmer the soup for forty five minutes with the lid partially covering the pot.

Stir it every ten minutes. Melt the butter in a skillet over a moderate to high heat, and then saute the leek, garlic, onion, and carrots until soft. Transfer the vegetables into the soup pot. Add the spinach and simmer the soup, partially covered again, for half an hour.

Turn the heat off and take out the ham hocks. Take the meat off the bones and discard the bones as well as any fatty bits. Return the chopped meat to the pot. Adjust the seasoning, add the rest of the parsley, and serve hot.

The Cabbage Soup Diet Review

One of the most popular diets today is the cabbage soup diet. This article takes a looks at the pros and cons of the diet to help you decide if it is the right diet for you.

The cabbage soup diet is fairly straightforward. It is a 7 day diet aimed at rapid weight loss which claims that you can lose 10 lbs. or more in the 7 days that you are on the diet. There is a special soup that you make using a combination of cabbage and other vegetables. The basic concept of the diet is that you can eat as much of the cabbage soup as you want each day to keep from getting too hungry. There is a 7 day eating plan that goes along with the soup which consists of a highly restrictive list of other foods that you are allowed to eat on the diet.

Although initially the diet may seem like a good idea and the promise of rapid weight loss is certainly tempting, there are quite a few problems with this diet that may not make it the best choice.

First, it is an extremely low calorie diet which can cause problems. Many people report feeling light headed when they are on the diet because they simply aren't getting enough calories. Along with that, eating too few calories can actually make it harder to lose weight and easier to gain it back since it throws your body into "starvation mode". Basically, your body thinks that you are starving so it slows down your metabolism to keep from using your fat reserves for energy in an effort to keep you alive longer. A slower metabolism will make it more difficult to lose weight.

The major problem with this diet aside from having too few calories is that most of the weight that you lose on it will be water weight. That means that the minute you go off the diet you will see the weight you have lost start to reappear. Obviously that's not what you are aiming for, right?

Because the cabbage soup diet is highly restrictive in regards to the types of foods that you eat and how few calories you eat it is very hard to stick with for the full 7 days without cheating or going off the diet. Along with that many people report that the cabbage makes them gassy which can be an embarrassing problem if you have to be out in public during the course of the diet.

About the only good side to the diet is that it includes a lot of fruits and vegetables. However, fruits and vegetables alone don't provide your body with all the nutrients that it needs.

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Chicken Noodle Soup is one of my specialties. The recipe I use varies in the way I make it each time. This is my own recipe, never written down, one of those experiments that comes from my head. As with the many of my recipes, I will throw this and that together; a handful of this and several shakes of that. When I do use a recipe, rarely do I follow it completely the way it is written.

This is a recipe is for a slow cooker, but a large stock pan can be substituted. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.

3 1/2 to 4 lbs. frying chicken
1 large onion (or 2 medium) - diced
3 carrots, sliced
3 celery stalks, sliced
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 tsp. lemon pepper
1 tsp. basil
1/2 tsp. thyme
2 tsp. parsley flakes (crushed)
1/2 tsp sage
2 tsp. beef bouillon (or 2 cubes)
2 tsp chicken bouillon (or 2 cubes)
1 1/2 to 2 c. 100% orange juice
2 1/2 to 3 c. egg noodles
5 c. of water
1 c. of water for bouillon

Wash chicken thoroughly, peel off skin and cut off any excess fat. Place chicken in slow cooker with 5 cups of water (or enough to cover chicken). Follow the directions on the slow cooker. In most cases, heat at 300 degrees until boiling, then simmer 3 to 4 hours. Chicken will be done when the meat falls off the bone.

During the time that you are cooking the chicken, cut up the vegetables and set aside.

When the chicken is done, take it out of the cooker, debone the chicken and break it into pieces. Strain the broth for any small bones through a strainer. (You can also strain it through cheesecloth to trap some of the grease. The fat can also be removed by chilling the broth overnight and skimming off the layer of fat from the top.)

Add back all of the broth to the slow cooker. Place the bouillon in the cup of hot water and mix until dissolved. Add the bouillon mixture and the orange juice to the slow cooker. Combine the chicken, vegetables and spices to the slow cooker. Heat the soup to boil and then simmer for at least an hour or until vegetables are tender.

Cook the egg noodles according to the directions, and then add to the pot. Cook another 30 minutes.

Makes about 4 1/2 quarts
Serves 10 (or 4 very hungry people)

Added notes:

Soup can be placed in smaller containers for the freezer. Soup can be frozen for several months.
